As an interior designer I am obsessed with fabrics and with that comes furniture. I have a list of iconic designers whose work I love and a list of designers still designing today whose work I love. There are a lot of furniture makers out there doing some amazing work right now, but if I had to pick a favorite I would have to pick my Dad.
I am lucky enough to have a woodworker for a father and he does fantastic work! Years ago he made me a dresser and some nightstands for my bedroom and they still look just as great today as they did when I first got them. Those are definitely the type of furniture pieces that will be kept forever.
It was a lot of fun picking out a design and going to select the wood that was to be used to construct each of the pieces. My Dad does all the woodworking and then turns the project over to my Mom who does all the finishing/staining of the furniture.
Once that very lengthy process is done, the furniture is finally delivered to me!
I am currently working on a design for a console for the TV in our living room that is inspired by mid-century modern designs. As soon as we finish that we will be passing the drawings over to my Dad. He is able to take the idea and do all the technical work (and by that I mean all the math) to figure out exactly how to build it and how much wood will be needed to do so. That project is a little ways down the list right now. He is currently building an entire set of furniture to be given to my brother and his fiance for their new home. After that I’m thinking my mom wants on the list so they can have some furniture made for their own house.
I do know that I will be adding to my current collection of Dad made furniture and I cannot wait to have pieces handmade by him spread throughout our home. It is amazing what he can turn a pile of wood into. For someone who does this as a hobby he sure churns out professional results. Happy Father’s Day Dad! And Happy Father’s Day to all the Dad’s out there!
