This month is all about the kitchen and one thing I have always wanted to do with my own kitchen is a retro remodel. Our home is currently rocking a very mid-century modern vibe, but the kitchen is definitely lacking in that awesome retro feel. Big plans are in store for the kitchen one day, but for now we can dream. Today we are sharing a retro kitchen remodel mood board inspired by retro appliances from Big Chill. We decided to take it one step further and choose a color from The Pantone Colors of the Year for 2016. Pastel colors were big in the 50’s and surprisingly enough so was pink. So for our first mood board we are going to play off the Rose Quartz color chosen by Pantone. If pink isn’t really your thing, don’t worry, we have another mood board coming your way later this week that will play off the Serenity Blue color. And if you don’t want to go full retro, we are going to modernize it a bit with the Serenity Blue while still keeping that retro feel. Today is all about Rose Quartz though! Lucky for us Big Chill has the perfect color selection for their appliances to allow us to do just that.
- Big Chill Retro Original Size Fridge in Pink Lemonade – I do not know how you cannot fall in love with a retro style refrigerator. I have been dreaming of having one of these in our kitchen for years!
- Big Chill Retro Hood in Pink Lemonade – No kitchen is complete without a hood over the cooking area. This retro style hood from Big Chill is the perfect complement to the retro stove we chose.
- Big Chill 36″ Retro Stove in Pink Lemonade – This will be the centerpiece of the kitchen. I am in love with the retro stove styling and the gorgeous pop of color. I am the first to admit pink is not usually my color, but I am loving this Pink Lemonade on this style of range.
- Dunn Edwards Paint Color DE5667 – Mint Smoothie – This pastel/minty green color is a great accent to accompany the Pink Lemonade of the Big Chill appliances
- Dunn Edwards Paint Color DET648 – White Picket Fence – This is the perfect neutral color for the walls of the kitchen. It will allow the two brighter colors we have chosen for the space to shine.
- Dunn Edwards Paint Color DE5094 – Berry Riche – This is the perfect rosy shade to complement the appliances.
- Maude Wallpaper from Wallpaper from the 70’s – This retro pattern is perfect for an accent wall or to line the backsplash of the kitchen with. The neutral grey tones blend perfectly with the chosen color palette and add pattern without taking away from the injection of color already in the space.
- Ivanhoe Marathon Porcelain Pendant from Barn Light Electric in 355-Jadite – No kitchen is complete without lighting. Love the retro feel of this light using our Mint Smoothie accent color. Hang a grouping of these over an island or peninsula, or hang one over the kitchen sink if you do not have an island or peninsula.
- Bertoia Bar Stool from Knoll Studio with green chair pad – This chair is one of my all time favorite chairs! Perfect vintage piece to add to a retro kitchen. They are incredibly comfortable, I know they do not look like they would be, but take my word for it.
- Cabinetry – To keep with the retro look I chose a slab style door front and drawer with retro boomerang drawer pulls from Rejuvenation.
- Whitehaven Apron front Sink from Kohler with Purist Faucet – I chose this to keep a retro feel with the sink without going to a large authentic retro sink. This style of sink will still keep with the retro styling of the kitchen, but be a cleaner more updated version.
- Wilsonart Retro Renovation Nostalgic Gray Y0409 – This high pressure laminate countertop material is the perfect addition to any retro kitchen. The small scale boomerang pattern on the top just screams retro 1950’s kitchen.
- Granada Tile Echo Tile Collection – Torino-937 in White, Black, and Silver – If you look at retro kitchens a patterned floor was very popular then. I chose this floor as it adds that retro pattern in a cement tile. This way we can get a retro pattern without all the grout of a mosaic tile pattern. The grey coloring of the tile is a neutral way to add pattern and still work with the pops of color in the kitchen.
So there you have it. A retro kitchen full of color. Colors you may not initially think of having in a kitchen, but it ends up looking wonderful when put together with the right elements to balance out the color, the retro styling, and the pattern in the space. Check back later this week for another take on Retro with more Big Chill appliances.
